Questions
Coffered ceiling FAQ.
Practical answers about coffered ceilings, decorative beams, planning, care and getting a quote.
Planning and installation
What is the difference between a coffered ceiling and a waffle ceiling?
In Canada the two names usually describe the same look: a grid of recessed panels framed by beams. “Coffered” is the broader architectural term, while “waffle” points to a regular square or rectangular grid. Either way, you get a ceiling with real depth and presence.
Can ceiling beams be added to an existing room?
Absolutely. Our lightweight plaster-coated profiles go up without rebuilding the ceiling or hanging heavy timber, so an existing room can be transformed. We plan the grid around your room’s dimensions and lighting.
How do you choose the right beam profile and grid size?
Start with the room size, ceiling height and where your lighting goes. A slimmer profile keeps a compact room calm, while a deeper one gives a large ceiling real drama. We’ll help you centre and proportion the grid so it looks designed for the room.
Are coffered ceilings only suitable for high ceilings?
Not at all. Coffered ceilings work at many heights when the beam depth and spacing suit the room: shallower profiles and larger coffers keep a lower ceiling feeling open. Send us your ceiling height and we’ll point you to the right profile.
Can coffered ceilings include LED lighting, recessed spotlights, or both?
Yes, both work beautifully. Concealed LED adds a soft glow, recessed spotlights add focus, and the beams neatly hide the wiring. Electrical work should be done by a licensed electrician, following local codes.
Can pot lights be installed directly in the ceiling beams?
Often, depending on the profile and the fixture. The beam needs enough width and depth for the housing and clearances, and where it doesn’t, the pot light sits just as well in the coffer panel. Your electrician and our team confirm the final placement.
Can the beams conceal wiring?
Yes, that’s one of the best perks. The hollow space in the beams gives wiring a clean, hidden route, so the finished ceiling stays tidy. A licensed electrician should make the connections, to code.
What makes integrated ceiling lighting easier to finish cleanly?
Plan the grid and the lighting together before installation. When they’re coordinated, cables and fixtures tuck inside the profile and the ceiling looks seamless. We’ll check dimensions and clearances with you up front.
Do you provide installation?
Yes. Everest Mouldings supplies and installs complete coffered ceilings across the GTA and surrounding area, from Burlington and Oakville in the west, through Newmarket, East Gwillimbury and Bradford West Gwillimbury, to Oshawa in the east. Outside that area, tell us about your project and we’ll review it.
Where is product supply available outside the installation area?
Yes. We help with profile selection and layout planning, and supply product for projects across much of Ontario and Canada. Delivery time and freight depend on the profile and destination, and we confirm them with you before you order.
How is this different from a traditional site-built coffered ceiling?
Site-built boxed beams mean carpentry, drywall, corner bead, taping and lots of sanding. Everest’s lightweight, pre-shaped plaster-coated profiles skip many of those steps, so there’s less labour, less mess and a faster install. Exact time and cost depend on your room.
What finish do the beams have after installation?
The profiles are joined and finished so the grid reads as one continuous architectural feature. They’re ready for paint: finish them in the ceiling colour or a coordinated shade. Paint is the finish for these profiles.
How long does a coffered-ceiling project take?
Most projects move quickly because the lightweight profiles replace several traditional beam-building stages. Timing depends on room size, grid layout, lighting and finishing, and we’ll give you a clear schedule once we’ve seen your room.
How much does a coffered or waffle ceiling cost?
Every room is different, so there’s no single price. Cost depends on the room size, profile, number of intersections, lighting and finishing. Send a sketch, dimensions and ceiling photos and we’ll give you a clear estimate.
What information should I send for a quote?
Send the room length and width, ceiling height, a few clear photos of the ceiling and your city. If you have lighting plans or a favourite profile, include them. We’ll take it from there, and may verify details on site before installation.
Do the coffered-ceiling mouldings have a lifetime warranty?
Yes. Everest mouldings carry a limited lifetime product-replacement warranty for manufacturing or material defects, under the published terms. It covers the moulding itself, not labour, painting or electrical work, or damage from improper installation.
Are the profile dimensions shown on the website exact?
Profile dimensions on the site are close planning references. For your final layout and fixture coordination, we confirm the exact current dimensions and drawing for your chosen profile before you order.
The basics
What is a coffered ceiling?
A coffered ceiling is a grid of recessed panels, called coffers, framed by beams or mouldings. The depth and shadow lines turn a flat ceiling into a striking architectural feature, which is why it’s such a classic way to give a room character.
Why are coffered ceilings so popular?
Because the beam grid adds depth, rhythm and a custom look people notice the moment they walk in. The profile, coffer size and room proportions shape the style, so you can make it your own.
Do coffered ceilings increase home value?
A coffered ceiling is the kind of detail people notice, adding character and a custom, high-end look to a home. We can’t promise a resale figure, since that depends on your home and market, but it’s an upgrade that makes a room feel finished.
Are coffered ceilings still in style?
Yes, they never really left. A slim, quiet profile gives a clean contemporary look and a deeper, more detailed one suits a traditional room, so the style is yours to choose. Match the scale to your room and trim and it looks timeless.
What are the benefits of a coffered ceiling?
It adds depth, character and a custom architectural detail that transforms a room. The beams can hide wiring and carry concealed LED lighting or spotlights, and our lightweight plaster-coated profiles are far easier to handle than timber. The grid is planned around your room and lighting.
What is a waffle ceiling?
A waffle ceiling is a coffered ceiling with a regular, evenly spaced grid of square or rectangular coffers. Same striking look, with a more uniform pattern.
Rooms
Which rooms suit a coffered ceiling best?
Anywhere the ceiling can be part of the design: living rooms, dining rooms, home offices, entrances and primary bedrooms are favourites. We plan the grid around the room size, ceiling height, existing trim and lighting.
Are coffered ceilings suitable for living rooms?
Yes, living rooms are a favourite, since they usually have the open ceiling a grid needs. Pick a beam depth and coffer size that suit the room and its lighting, and we’ll help with how the profiles attach.
Are coffered ceilings suitable for dining rooms?
Yes. A grid centred over the table and coordinated with the light fixture makes a dining room feel special. We’ll help you choose the profile depth and the attachment method.
Are coffered ceilings suitable for home offices?
Definitely. A coffered ceiling gives a home office a polished, professional feel. Choose a profile scale that suits the ceiling height and plan the grid with your lighting.
Are coffered ceilings suitable for luxury homes?
Yes, beam grids are a hallmark of high-end interiors. What makes them shine is proportion, finish quality and detailing, so choose a profile that suits the room and its trim. Tell us about your project and we’ll confirm availability.
Are coffered ceilings suitable for commercial projects?
Yes, they make beautiful decorative ceilings in commercial interiors. For a commercial project we share the current product data and installation details, and your designer can confirm the substrate, finish and any code requirements.
Decorative ceiling beams
What are decorative ceiling beams?
Decorative ceiling beams are beam-shaped architectural trim that adds depth, character and visual structure to a ceiling. They are decorative, not structural: they’re applied to the ceiling and carry no load.
Why use decorative ceiling beams?
They define a ceiling pattern, add real depth and can hide wiring, all without structural work. Pick the profile and spacing that suit your room and you get a truly custom look.
What are faux ceiling beams?
A faux beam looks like a solid timber beam but is a decorative profile instead. Ours are lightweight plaster-coated profiles, so they’re far easier to handle and finish than heavy timber. Tell us which profile you like and we’ll share the construction details.
Are decorative beams structural?
No, they are decorative trim and carry no structural load. Anything heavy, like a fixture, should have its own support designed for the load.
What styles work well with ceiling beams?
Match the scale and detailing to your trim and room. A simpler profile suits a clean, restrained layout, and a more detailed profile complements ornate mouldings. Check the dimensions on each profile page, and a drawing or sample can help you judge the scale.
Are ceiling beams suitable for modern homes?
Yes, beams look great in modern homes. For a clean contemporary look, start with the simplest, sharpest-lined profiles and a regular grid, then match the scale to the room.
Are ceiling beams suitable for traditional homes?
Yes. More detailed profiles echo an existing cornice and other mouldings beautifully. We can send drawings or samples so you can see the combination.
Can decorative beams be stained?
Paint is the finish for these profiles. They’re plaster-coated, so they aren’t designed for wood stain, and no stain system is approved. A rich painted colour gives a great result.
Are ceiling beams popular in Toronto?
Yes, coffered ceilings are very popular in Toronto and the GTA, and we can plan the grid, supply the profiles and install them. Check the service areas for your city, then send your room dimensions for a quote.
Care and value
Are coffered ceilings difficult to maintain?
No, they’re easy to live with. Dust them like any ceiling and repaint when the finish ages, following the paint maker’s instructions. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasives on the plaster coating, and we’re happy to share care tips.
Do decorative beams require maintenance?
Very little. Dust occasionally and repaint when you redecorate, following your paint’s instructions. We can share care tips for your profile.
Are coffered ceilings worth the investment?
For most homeowners, yes. You get a dramatic look that adds character and a custom, high-end feel to the whole room, in lightweight, Canadian-made profiles that install quickly compared with building beams from timber. We can’t promise a financial return, but a project quote shows you exactly what it takes.
Are decorative beams worth the investment?
Yes, for the effect you get. Decorative beams give a room a dramatic, finished look and added character, in lightweight profiles made in Canada that install faster than timber. A project quote makes the cost clear.
